Upon signing up for a UNIX account at https://ds.utk.edu/uact/default.asp?func=unix&info=register, your UNIX password will be your NETID/Tmail/Active Directory password until you change it.

Once you sign into the account you can change this either by SSH/Terminal or at https://ds.utk.edu/passwords/.

  • To change your password at https://ds.utk.edu/passwords/, you will need to go to the website and click on Unix Password.  You will then click Change Password on the following page.  You will be prompted to enter your UNIX username and old password.  You will then be prompted to type in a new password.
  • To change your password in SSH/Terminal, log in and type the command "passwd USERNAME" at the prompt. Follow the on-screen prompts.

All password changes may take up to 15 minutes to take effect.
